“Still want to pretend that kiss didn’t mean anything, Chief?” And just like that, the bottom dropped out from under me. She didn’t wait for a response. She didn’t need to. I was sure my thoughts were written over every inch of my face. She just smiled—a little knowing and a little daring—and walked back to the table of troublemakers. All I could do was stand there and watch. I didn’t go after her. I couldn’t. Not now. Not yet.
