Some historians, however, believe Le Morte d’Arthur was written by Thomas Malory of Studley and Hutton in Yorkshire while he was a prisoner of war in France. It also is possible that its author was yet another Thomas Malory, whose identity remains unknown. All that can be said with certainty is that Le Morte d’Arthur is the only medieval romance that has held the imagination of more than five centuries of readers, down to the present day.
