“I wouldn’t be able to live with myself not knowing if you got home safely.” He was staring at me with nothing but sincerity in his eyes. “Let me give you a ride home. You’re safe with me.”
The wheels in my head were already turning on how I could make sure this woman never left my sight.
“Phileigh, this is Rich, Malcom, and Monte. They’re my security.” He introduced me. “Fellas, this is Phileigh.” “Hi.” I waved shyly. “Some shit pop off, protect her before me,” he told them, and my heart skipped a beat. Was he putting my life before his own? “Y’all got it?” “Got it,” they all said in unison as we headed down the hallway to the elevators.
“I hope you know I’m not letting up on you, Phileigh Cheese.”
“Can I start with learning the flavor of this pussy?” His hands roamed up my shirt and then down into my pants. I was speechless as my pussy leaked and my nipples hardened.
“I’m… um… pregnant!” I blurted out in between moans. The words spilled out, and he lifted his face to look at me. “That’s not how this works. You get pregnant after I fuck you.”
“We’ll both be experiencing something new then. You’ve never been pregnant before, and I’ve never dated anyone pregnant. We can figure this shit out at the same damn time.”
“He or she is definitely meant to be here. Just like we were meant to meet. I don’t believe in coincidences, Phileigh.”
“The unexpected things are sometimes the best things that happened to us.”
“I know what I want, Phileigh, and I intend to apply the necessary pressure to get it. I want to get to know you, Phileigh Cheese, baby or not. Can you allow me the rest of the week to do so?
“Word of advice… When a man offers to get you nice things, be skeptical, but accept them, chile. You always deserve it.”
“As far as I’m concerned, this is my baby now. I don’t care who helped you conceive it. God put y’all in my presence for a reason, and I’m not about to fumble this.”
“Don’t you even think about depriving little Phileigh Cheese so you can watch your figure. Give her what she wants, and I’ll work those extra pounds off you later, da fuck?”
“Sometimes always being the bigger person is worth it, though.” Her voice was gentle, and those big, beautiful eyes were staring up at me with concern. “It doesn’t matter who initiates the communication as long as it helps mend things in the long run.”
I stared at him. What the hell did he want me to say? He played a stupid game, and he won a silly prize.
“Your baby being Reggie’s doesn’t change how I see you. You’re still the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on with the sweetest pussy I’ve tasted and the softest aura around you.”
“Love is many things.” Her voice was low. “But nothing toxic comes from genuine love.”
“Mrs. Read?” Kellon slid the phone out of my hand. His jaw was tight. “With all due respect,” he said politely. “I’m here. I care about your daughter, and I care about this baby. We ain’t doing this by the textbook, but that doesn’t garner disrespect. I am a stable man and capable of taking care of my responsibilities. I’d appreciate it if you respected that.”
“You look like a woman who has a man that don’t play about her.”
I scanned through the notifications, gauging the general opinions about us. Some people were happy, and others commented on her looks. The majority, though, were just happy she was black as if there was ever any chance for me to give my generational wealth back to the same people whose ancestors had stolen mine. I got it, though. I swiped out of the notifications just as my phone started ringing in my hand.
“Yeah, it is. You’re not calling to warn me. You calling ’cause you salty I’m standing next to a woman you fumbled. One you had no business with in the first place, knowing you had Nat. And while we’re at it, check your fiancée. She watching Phee’s every move like a fan. Y’all obsessed over there?”
“Naw, nigga, don’t come at my girl like that. Control your situation and leave mine alone. We’re good over here. Phileigh good. Your baby good. A real nigga stepped up. Don’t call my phone again, nigga. And don’t make any more pop-up visits to see her either.”
“I’m going to be everything you and baby boy need,” I said, connecting my lips to hers. “Baby J. I think we should name him after your brother.”
“No matter what anyone says,” Kellon said. His voice was low like he meant business. “This baby is mine. Our family is real, and we’re not entertaining drama or distractions. We choose love over lies.”
“Phileigh Cheese, I’ve loved you since that day I saw you posted up in that stairwell, hiding away from the world.” I took a deep breath to blow away my nerves. “You looked like you needed a friend. I didn’t know if it was really me that needed you and Baby J. Baby, you have brought me peace. You’ve made me a father. You’ve made me a better man. Baby, you made me believe that happiness isn’t just something other people get to have. It’s something I can have because I deserve it.”
“You tryna make me suck your dick in this baby room, ain’t you?”
Everything I never knew I needed came wrapped in faith, fate, and an unexpected pass I was lucky to have caught.
