“I would apologize, but I’m afraid apologies are wasted on the dead.” The Director gave an offended huff. “You’ll have to explain yourself, because I’m not sure what I did to deserve threats.” There were three shadows behind the First Director of the Magic Tower. A broad grin bloomed on the face of one of them. A grin and one shining orange eye. “Sheep, sheep, sheep,” Omega said. “I have bad news for you. It’s finally my turn.”
“Tell me, what is the difference between you and my son?” “He is significantly taller,” Melerius said.
Kyri, my mentor in water magic, had attempted to overcome my fear by showing me that drowning wasn’t so bad. It did eventually work, but I don’t recommend the process. And, for the record, drowning is so bad.
They exchanged glances, then Rellask said, “We have a court alchemist back on Karosha, and I don’t think she’s so bad.” I patted his shoulder. “No, I’m sure she’s—” I cut off again as I realized who he was probably talking about. “Is her name Fyrellis?” “Yeah!” “I meant every word I said about alchemists. Every word.”
“And here I thought the sum total of your tactical knowledge was punch, punch harder, and punch hardest.” Raion patted his belt. “I often use a sword!”
“My apologies. I’m only impatient to save my crew.” “We share the same feelings,” Shyrax said. “Anger is only an asset to the degree that you can keep it contained.”
In the moment it took me to ponder, Shyrax rested her hand on my shoulder. “Do not trouble yourself, Captain. I will take responsibility.” I looked toward her. “I was going to take it easy.” “There is sense in him. If I must, I will reach into his gullet and pull it out by hand, but I am afraid that a duel with you would only result in trauma and embarrassment.”
Seconds later, Shyrax was jettisoned into space. “I love it, Commander!” Omega shouted across her processor. “Suicide missions are my favorite kind!”
Benri’s respect for Solstice dropped a notch. Who was desperate enough to rely on alchemists?
“Solstice is backed by the World Spirit of Fathom,” Benri said immediately. “Probably others as well. This is a violation of the Treaty of Immortals, not to mention governmental interference regulations when it comes to an attempt on my life.”
“Baptize me in the Aether! Remake me! I will be reborn!”
A moment later, Horizon’s voice broke through into Omega’s processor. “Omega! My Pilot! Can you hear me?” “Of course! Why don’t we catch up? I don’t have anything better to do.” Aila split Omega in half and the slash carried on through him, caving in a mechanic’s shop.
