“And besides, I’m not committing, I’m… testing the waters.” “By performing high treason? That’s a reasonable first step in a relationship. Really frames the romance in a nice light, you know?”
“You’re going to have to let me go, Elas.”
Bathed in the afternoon sun, his hair that looked brown inside has transformed into a dirty blonde, each strand shimmering with a golden light. It’s fitting that he’s a walking ray of sunshine.
urging anyone with glowing skin to report to the nearest military medical facility. That one was wild.
“Did it make you mad to see his hands on me? Doing what you haven’t done?” His hand drops to the table, only inches from mine, and his fingers flex against the wooden top. “Because you’ve never touched me, have you?”
“Elas?” “Yeah, doc?” “You really do have a beautiful smile,” he mumbles,
“I couldn’t get you out of my mind after we met. The smiling, gentle-souled man stuck inside that jail. You were so out of place in there… the only color in that whole room. Everyone else was black and white, while you had an entire fucking sunny day shining off you.” He laughs again, this one reaching his eyes. “Fuck, doc, you told me it was nice to meet me. And you meant it.”
“Doc’s got a big dick, huh?”
“I’m yours?” he finally asks. “Yes. You are mine, and I am yours.”
“Fuck,” he mutters, crashing his lips to mine in a clumsy kiss. “That’s what you want? To be mine?” I pull back with a gentle smile, one that's full of sincerity and overflowing with emotion. “If we’re telling the truth, El? I think I’ve been yours for a while now.”
Where you go, I go… and if we go, we go. We run.”
“They believe the mark changes when both sides have accepted the bond. The final step in the mating process.”
“Ever since you walked into that prison and smiled at me, you’ve had me. So have me, Elas. Make me yours.”
“I want everything you have to offer. Those imperfect pieces that you hide from the world, and the messy ones that aren’t always put together. I want them all, August. All of you.”
“You’re amazing,” he whispers, placing a soft kiss on my hair. “You are everything I ever wanted, and everything I never knew I could have.”
“Elas?” His lips graze mine and he pulls back, waiting. “What does it feel like to be in love?” Those endlessly dark eyes search mine for a long moment. “I think it feels a lot like this,” he finally says, and then he kisses me, and nothing else matters.
“I love you, El,” he whispers. “I love you, too.”
“You never have to fear me,” I finally say, and August squeezes my hand. “But if the day comes that you meet that part of me… the part that should terrify you… I just hope you still love me on the other side.”
“Thank you for saving me,” I whisper, and he hugs me tighter, something warm and light seeming to flow between us and causing my mark to buzz in response. “You’ve got it all wrong, doc,” he says, pressing a tender kiss to my hair. “You’re the one who saved me.”
“Nyx has been in captivity since the veil fell. He was test subject number one.”
But August is light, and I could never dim that glow. I’ve lived in the darkness, and as it turns out, a life in the dark is no life at all.
