Kierkegaard echoed Augustine’s reminder that God’s benevolent providence is concerned with the individual’s salvation, not with worldly felicity or even continued earthly life. Augustine, Kierkegaard admiringly notes, said, “Certainly God has promised you forgiveness — but he has not promised you tomorrow” (JP 2, 1210).
