“YOU’VE BEEN WARNED.”
“Keep a low profile. They already know you’re here. The Veil’s reach is extensive. And your client, Damien Blackhollow? He may look pretty and respectable, but there’s a deadly monster hidden under all that gloss. He’s the worst of them. Trust me on that.”
“If things were different… if we had more time...” he says softly, his voice barely audible over the chanting. “I would’ve given you the world.”
“There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you. I would’ve bled for you. Burned for you. Without you, I’m already dead.”
“You don’t have to be afraid anymore, James,” he whispers. “You’re mine now. And I don’t let anyone touch what’s mine.”
Us. In this moment, I don’t care if the Veil still lingers in the dark, waiting. I don’t care what Lucien wants or what unfinished dangers may still hunt us. I don’t even care about Damien’s secrets, no matter how deep, how dark, how terrible they may be. Because whatever comes next, whatever horrors still lie ahead, I know I won’t be facing them alone anymore.
It turns out that Damien and Lucien were both telling the truth. Neither of them had played a role in the prior sacrifices of Damien’s fiancée or the other murdered women, nor were they responsible for the death of their father, Ian Blackhollow. It had been the Veil all along—at least, a small faction of it—pulling the strings. I’m optimistic that once the DA’s office looks into things, they’ll be able to put the pieces together and release Damien
Damien never claimed to be a good man, just not a man that hurts the people he truly cares about. He’s still dangerous. Possibly a killer, and who knows what else…
Lucien sought revenge on the Veil members responsible for all the recent murders and claimed to want to take the Veil in a different direction—though I wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. Lucien even promised my safety, and Maddie’s too, swearing we’d be under his protection if we stayed at Blackthorn Manor.
My thoughts about Damien’s brother are frustratingly complex, the lines between ally and enemy blurring whenever I think of Lucien. I didn’t see it coming, that he would be the one to save us all.
I remember reading during my research that fire was one of the four elements sacred to the Veil, a calling to ancient sacrifices from Salem’s Fall’s darkest days, the days of witchcraft. Lucien must have used that link to fire to his advantage, I just don’t know why or how.
Why would he risk everything for us?
Quinn could be the one who makes everything right, who pulls me back from the shadows I’ve waded through. It’s almost perfect.
Forever Tethered.
“I’ll still run Blackhollow Industries, of course. But the Veil—Lucien can have it. He always wanted it more than I did. I only stayed because it was expected of me, it was my legacy. But you…” He shakes his head slightly, like I’ve somehow unraveled him. “You make me want something different. Something more. A new legacy.” His fingers trail down my arm before catching my hand, his grip warm and grounding. “I don’t want control. I don’t want power. I just want you.”
“So, what’s it going to be, Counselor?”
It’s not gentle. It’s not careful. It’s fierce and consuming, a collision of fire and frost. His grip tightens as if daring me to pull away, but I don’t this time. I couldn’t even if I wanted to. The world disappears, lost to the press of his mouth, the heat of his body, the way he steals my breath and gives me his in return, sealing my fate to his. Forever. When we finally break apart, I’m dizzy, my heart pounding against his. The way he looks at me—like I belong to him, like I always have—makes it impossible to imagine ever walking away again. The city lights blur around us, but the shadows
