“Goddess keep you,” I mutter, then turn away, looking to find the best path forward for myself, away from the melee of bodies.
okay just a thought literally why do they make all the recruits do this it makes no sense. if this is a 500 yr war they are losing they need all the recruits they can get so why force them to do this stupid thing that is likely to kill them and that only the elite ever want to do or succeed at anyways. obvy FMC here is gonna bond but that’s so rare idk it doesn’t make any sense
“A tattoo for your kill,” Izabel replies.
so hang on. they’re explicitly not supposed to kill each other and were promised harsh punishment if they did. evidently the punishment is a single tattoo. but the tattoo is also a commemoration of the fellow bonded killed. so there’s no real punishment and it’s kinda cool?
He agreed so quickly to this I was sure he’d misheard my request and thought we were marching off to a mildly incestuous four-way.
“Not—not another Rawbond,” I say, my mouth suddenly dry, trying not to cower at the intense look he’s giving me. “Just… someone else. But I should remember it.” He stares at me, hard, for another silent moment and then nods, going back to the needle.
He can sleep standing like a horse, for all I care.
“Meryn, what have you done?” he shudders out, stepping away from me with wide eyes, hands shaking. Then, anger. His expression contorts into fury. “Guards! Seize her! She’s killed the king!”
