“You know,” Igor starts, “I’ve met a lot of strong people in my day, between the fighting circuits and the army. But I’ve never known a stronger-willed brat than you.”
“It’s Anassa,”
“She never bonds. They say she’s been here for hundreds of years…”
I’ve seen men like him before. The quiet ones. The dangerous ones. The men who don’t shout threats because they simply don’t need to.
I haven’t seen my tattoo since I got it this morning. And it’s… oddly beautiful.
It wraps around the side of my neck, midway up, at about the same level I had to shear my hair. It’s in the same runic style as the others I’ve seen, but with decorative elements that swirl like dark fire, moving fluidly around a central circle empty of saturation.
“Don’t let it get to you, Meryn,”
“We’ve all had to do things we aren’t proud of. Just remember why you did what you did.”
When he finally leans down to lick the wounds on my arms, I get a rush of arousal so intense my breath catches in my throat.
“Welcome home, my queen.”
“By everyone except for my family. As you know, we are the sworn protectors of the royal line.”
“Who moved you to your own quarters when someone tried to kill you in the night? Me!”
“Who has been training you and strengthening you at every turn? Me!”
“Do you know how hard it was to see you with him?”
“Never. You are the danger. Any person who doesn’t see that deserves what’s coming to them.”
Stark is by my side. His hand is warm on my back, rubbing in gentle, calming circles. I didn’t know this big brute of a man was capable of such a small and soft motion.
I am Meryn Sturmfrost, Queen of Nocturna, and I will use the twisting dark in my bones and my blood to hunt Killian Valtiere to the ends of the earth.
The fire in her is astounding to behold. Stark will use every ounce of her hatred to stoke it—until she can burn the world down.
