Ambedkar is also perhaps alluding to the fact that Gandhi often compared himself to the ‘Bhangi’—the caste among Untouchables forced into sweeping and scavenging work—and often announced that he cleaned the toilets in his ashrams. As far as Ambedkar is concerned, a saint or a Mahatma indulging in such performative gestures does not alter the beliefs of people as such.
