It’s important to know that even if the pope were to infallibly declare abortion to be wrong, CFC would not accept this. In CFC’s magazine Conscience, Rosemary Radford Ruether writes that if the pope were to infallibly define the Church’s prohibition on contraception, it “would have the immediate effect of focusing Catholic dissent on the doctrine of infallibility itself. . . .
