“Cock Ring? Is that you?”
“I own this place. Tessa is my business manager.” He scuffs the ground with a boot and shoves both hands in his pockets.
it’ll officially haunt me forever that I called my new boss Cock Ring in the middle of the airport.
“Storm knows her?”
dunno, how about the fact that if Mandy gets a single sniff of me being in any sort of proximity to another woman, I’ll be locked into this marriage for even longer, Tessa? I’m so fucking tired—it’s been ten years—I’m so close to being out—”
Beau swigs back his beer, fixing me with those blue eyes the color of a fall sky.
According to my period tracker, I’m going to be ovulating any minute, and in that case, I probably need to consider how to chain myself to a tree like a werewolf on a full moon.
“Folks might love to refer to us as the ‘Chaos Twins’ around these parts, but ignore my brother if he’s a grouchy asshole when you catch up with him at the bar. Fuck face barely knows how to string more than two words together on a good day. He’s the kind of destruction you don’t hear coming.”
I’m on a direct course to reunite with my cabin, that beautiful outdoor tub, and my trusty bullet vibe.
“Good to see you two are still keeping it in the family.” Storm shoots a scowl my way that makes me want to crack a smile a mile wide.
Little did I know that day when I ran into her on the sidewalk would permanently alter everything I thought I knew about desire and attraction for another person.
My sisters and I have a weakness for all things paranormal conspiracies and alien cover-ups, and they’re forever sending me things to binge watch. I’ve secretly grown to love it as I’ve gotten older.
“Fucking hell, sugar. You look like you wanna come over here and shove that pool cue somewhere. Got it real bad, huh?”
“I’m certifiably weak for cute girls with tattoos who could ruin my life… and men with mustaches. That’s the reason I didn’t want you to shave yours.”
“You should come with a fucking warning.”
“Doing the wrong thing turns you on, doesn’t it?”
Why don’t you fuck your fist for me, cowboy?”
“Don’t know what you mean.”
“You ever want to talk about it, or need someone who understands what it’s like to be forever confused by your own damn self? I’m your gal.”
“When did you first… I mean… how did you know you were?”
“Just figuring some stuff out. Nothing I can’t handle. But thanks… you know…”
Not knowing when the next round of payment is going to be collected.
Cock Ring.
“Of course you did. It’s this fucking hat, isn’t it? Scrambles your cowboy brain cells.”
“Sunsets are always the one thing I’m constantly chasing.”
“You know nightfall is coming, but there’s so much color there, and it’s a different painting every time. The sky is so vast and unpredictable. That’s a gift for a photographer. You could set up your tripod in exactly the same position every single day, waiting for the exact same time of evening, and never take the same photo twice.”
“You’re my sunset sky, baby. Bright and mysterious and beautiful all at the same time.”
“It’s silly. It’s not one thing in particular… but it’s that energy of the moment, you know? The romance of it all. The willingness to lay yourself bare for someone, to leave it all out on the field and risk it all. That’s the high stakes of one character offering up their heart to another. You know it’s pure romance when it sends chills down your spine and makes your stomach flip.”
“Are you sure you’re not bringing me out here as a sacrifice to appease the mountain hillbillies?” I narrow my eyes at him. “They won’t want me. I’m certainly not virginal, and I’m far too opinionated to be considered a peace offering.”
“Beau. Tell me your wife isn’t standing out there.”
“What’s that look about?” “Are you in love with him?” She asks, with softness welling in her big green eyes.
Right now, I don’t give a shit about anything but getting to her. For Sage, I’d risk every fucking thing.
Briar and the others, they know?”
didn’t tell them if that’s what you’re worried about. They guessed of their own accord because you acted like an idiot and took my phone. As if you were my boyfriend or something.”
“Am I not?” I narrow my focus on her.
“Fine by me. It’s no use to me anymore. It belongs to you, trouble.”
“This is the only good thing… you are the only good thing… so you’d better damn well wear my hat, shut up, and take my dick like my perfect little slut.”
It doesn’t matter what the question might be. I’ve already said yes.
“You and I? We’re end game, baby.” Then he shoots his arm forward to block the driver’s side so I can’t climb into the truck. “I’m in love with you, Sage.”
Then, say the three words that burn as they pass across my lips before shutting the door on my lie. “I won’t run.”
“Please stay with me. Please.” His voice cracks, and I feel the surge of emotion rising higher inside me now.
“I finally figured out what to name the ranch.” When he eventually responds, Beau’s voice drops to a low murmur.
“Baby, when you’re ready... only you will know when that is… if those stars ever align, come and find me in that sunset sky.”
If I ran into her, I’d gladly let my weak-ass pregnancy bladder leak all over her.
“Hope everyone is enjoying their night out there.”
Beau stands on stage,
“My girl is in this arena somewhere. She’s been touring with you fine folk this whole year, and I’m here to ask if you’d be willing to share her with me. Life ain’t worth doing if it’s without her, and if that means I gotta start living life on the road again, then hell, I’m about to beg someone to give me a job on this tour just so I don’t have to spend another minute without my girl.”
Sunset Skies Ranch.
