With this Mark, may the bond become physical, that we can always sense each other’s presence and crave each other’s closeness. My power claims you as its own
She vomited into the bowl, heaving over and over. It wasn’t her dinner that came up though. It wasn’t even the tonic. She assumed her body had burned through all of that already. It was thick, black shadows and silvery wisps of light.
Tessa thought their meeting in that corridor was random. It was anything but. He’d had his choices narrowed down to five, and he’d sought them all out in the hours before the Selection Ceremony. She had been the last one he’d tracked down. He’d never expected her to be hiding in an alcove out in the corridor. Then again, maybe he should have based on the number of times she sneaked off the Fae Estate in the Celeste Kingdom.
It had been pure coincidence that he’d stumbled upon her on his way back from washing his hands after another Legacy had bumped into him and caused wine to spill over the side of his glass and all over his hand.
But when Theon’s gaze had landed on her, when he’d found her leaning against another male and he’d felt the prickle of irritation at seeing another’s hands on her, he’d known it was over.
She’d never figured out how she could evade them.
“You don’t scare me, Theon,” Tessa retorted, grateful her voice didn’t waiver because she was fucking terrified. “I really, really should, beautiful,” he answered, a cruel smile twisting on his lips. Darkness began to coil and swarm around his feet, creeping over the ground like a dense fog. It stood out starkly, even amongst the dimming light of dusk.
The bond was content sleeping next to him every night, but each day she found it harder and harder to resist the pull of the cord inside her that was pushing for more. And each day she wondered if she was losing more and more of her mind. Of herself. Each day she wondered if this would be the day she finally gave up.
“Because if you did, you’d know why we tried to prepare ourselves for them. You’d know that those tests are designed to push you to the edge of breaking to see what inherent magic resides inside you. You’d know that I have endured physical pain to the point of losing consciousness, only to be healed just enough to continue. You’d know that I have been made to watch those I care about most being tortured in front of me, and I have been tortured in front of them. You’d know that one time, they had me convinced that I had parents and siblings, that I had a fucking family who loved me for no other

“I don’t know,” Axel said. “The way she spoke, she’s broken so many times she just figured out how to hold the pieces together.”
“Would it make you feel better to keep your eyes on me while I kneel at your feet later tonight?”
“No one can steal your thunder if you are the storm,” he replied, stretching a hand toward her. “Be the fucking storm, Tessa.”
Screams echoed around her, and her magic seemed to like it.
