She loved dawn. Watching the sun start to climb. The promise that anything could happen. Nothing ever changed for her, but she liked the idea that something could change.
“You’re a survivor, Tessa,” Corbin said. “What if I don’t want to be one anymore?”
“Do you wish for death, Risna?” “It would certainly add some excitement to our lives.”
She’d been trying to learn, trying to understand, trying to do what was expected of her. She’d been trying, and all he’d done was tell her it wasn’t enough. That she wasn’t enough. That he needed her to try harder. Needed her to be more. Needed her to give and give and give.
Theon had just left, and now she stood in the center of the room. Alone. Just like she’d been last night. Just like she’d been nearly her entire life. But maybe that was all right. Maybe alone was fine. When you were alone, there was no reason to trust anyone. No opportunity to let someone hurt you.
