Netanyahu’s hooded gaze and disengaged demeanor made it clear to me that he was running out the clock. He denied Gazans were starving and blamed Hamas for looting food. I interrupted to reiterate the need for an immediate ceasefire and a day-after plan that gave Palestinians some kind of political horizon. Netanyahu wanted only a temporary ceasefire to get hostages back but did not want to end the war. It was clear that nothing would be accomplished. We’d outlined the terms of negotiation for the ceasefire back in May and made frustratingly little progress with either Israel or Hamas.
