Even when we were in high school, my eyes would somehow always find him in a crowd, like he was a homing device made just for me.
She’s spent so much of her life taking care of herself, and taking over that job has always been my favorite way of showing her how much she means to me.
“You’re the strongest person I know, Elsie Jennings, even if you don’t feel like it all the time.” The words feel like warm honey slipping down my spine, making the cold, dark places inside me feel like they’re thawing for the first time in months.
“I’ll wait as long as you need me to, Els, as long as you promise you will come back to me one day.”
The dance floor, the canvas, and especially our baby, were lucky just to be touched by you, for however long you had them. Not all endings are failings. Some are just chances for us to start over.”
“You may not need me there,” he says, drawing my attention back to his. “But I want to be there for you. If you decide you need a shoulder to lean on, mine will be right there.”
“You don’t have to carry it all yourself.”
I don’t know that I’ll ever look at the marks on my body and call them tiger stripes or battle scars or any other body positivity term the media tries to rebrand it as, but I do know that if I ever look down at my body and see another stretch mark, I’ll remember the look on Beau’s face, the sound of his voice calling that little piece of pale skin perfect.
Even when we were both at our worst, my soul never stopped trying to find its way back to hers.
This isn’t our first rodeo, and one way or another, we’re going to find our way back to each other.
I’m working on being vulnerable more often. It sucks.
