“My wife will be coming home with me.”
That’s all it takes for his lips to crash into mine, stealing what little breath I had left. Nothing feels like this. Like Beau. Like us.
“Elsie, I know you need time, and I’m fighting myself every day to give it to you, but I want you to know that no matter how long you take, I’ll be waiting for you at the end of it. I know what I want, and no amount of time is going to change that.”
“I just realized I didn’t say it before,” I murmur, staring into eyes more familiar than my own, my throat thick with emotion. “But I’m so ridiculously happy that we’re having a baby.”
This isn’t our first rodeo, and one way or another, we’re going to find our way back to each other.
“But if I’m being totally honest, I want a girl. One just like you.”
Elsie has always been beautiful to me, since that very first day, but there’s something primal inside me that loves seeing her pregnant with my baby.
He shakes his head. “No, that’s a lie. I love it.” His mouth moves closer, right next to my ear. “I like knowing my baby is growing inside you. I like knowing I did it. It makes me feel oddly…possessive.” “Oh,” I gasp. “Does that bother you?” he asks, again right in my ear, so close I can feel the heat of his breath, the brush of his lips. “No.”
Today is the last day I hurt others because I’m hurting. I’m done breaking the people I love because I’m broken.
She looks like something precious. Like mine.
My hand covers hers, retrieving the phone to click on an album before returning it to her. “I’ve been documenting it.”
