“Nevernight,” he muttered. “Stupid name for a book.”
“It has footnotes? What kind of wanker writes a novel with footnotes?”
“Tric,” Mia said. “Do you remember that time we were acolytes and you talked me out of doing something I desperately wanted by appealing to my sensible side?” The boy tilted his head. “… NO.” “Me either,” Mia replied. “Now show me the way. Or get the fuck out of it.”
“Sometimes the past won’t just die. Sometimes you have to kill it.”
Father is another name for God in a child’s eyes. And Mother is the very earth beneath her feet.
“You know what they say. What doesn’t kill me had better fucking run.”

“Don’t fuck with librarians, young lady. We know the power of words.”
“All right,” she nodded. “Just be careful not to fall over the side, aye?” He smiled, sweet and sad. “I’LL NOT LEAVE YOU,” he said. “NO MATTER WHAT. NEVER FORGET I LOVE YOU, MIA. AND GODDESS WILLING, I’LL LOVE YOU FOREVER.” He turned and trudged down the stairs, his shirt plastered to his skin, the lines of muscle etched in black velvet and leather. Mia’s chest hurt as she watched him make his way down the bow and plant himself like some ancient tree, black hands raised to the sky, head thrown back.
