He swivels his eyes toward us, and his gaze lands on mine. It snags, like a stuck zipper in fabric, jerking against my stomach and taking threads with it. My gaze can’t budge. His doesn’t either.
His eyes relax, like he’s mentally extending a chair for me to join him in our silent, all-seeing space. He’s kicking his feet back. He’s not going anywhere.
Burke’s Bakery is both my biggest accomplishment and one of my biggest problems. I love it.
The man’s gaze finally meets mine, and suddenly, my shoes feel rooted to the ground. My stomach barrels down to the dirt. This is the man from Mom’s wake.
But Michelle looks at all of it with some type of awe. I’m in some type of awe too. There are lots of beautiful women in Copper Run, but I can’t remember the last time I saw someone as breathtaking as her.
But I can’t stop staring at her and grinning from ear to ear. She’s so bold and unapologetic.
The women aren’t the problem though. It’s the brother—Cliff Burke—who keeps drifting through my mind. Cliff Burke, with his veined hands raking through loose brown hair. Cliff Burke, with his crooked smile and deep laugh. Cliff Burke, who doesn’t understand personal space.
