Their eyes locked for the span of a heartbeat, and she whimpered. The sound echoed through his skull, and his hands stilled. Fear? Is she afraid…of me? Uncertainty cut through his single-minded fever, chased by a spike of sadness. But I would cherish you, little doe.
“Aurora, I’d like to introduce Rhaego, your new husband.” Something akin to a choked whimper escaped her. After a beat of tense silence, she lifted her head, but her eyes still didn’t meet his. Her watery gaze only rose so far as his chest, and as she rasped a meek “Hello,” a single tear slipped down her left cheek. There was no blade on Clecania that could slice him as deeply as that tear.
Rhaego stooped, picked a flower, and extended it toward her with a smile. “I heard humans enjoy receiving these.” Aurora eyed the blossom, her chest warming and clenching all at once. It looked just like a red gladiolus.
when his firm gaze met hers and her words caught in her throat. He’d never looked at her like this. So…sternly. “You will let me tend to you, female.” The dripping of water on a once spotless floor punctuated his words. Her heart raced. Aurora shook her head despite her insides squealing to learn in what ways this handsome demon might tend to her. His mouth turned down and a small growl pulsed from his chest. Her shaking head grinded to a halt. “You’ve done a poor job caring for yourself, so now I will see to it. And you…Will. Not. Argue,” he intoned when her lips parted to argue.
“Eat first.” Brows lifting at the command, she peered down at the bowl and lifted it. He’d never been so demanding of a female, and he found that her continued obedience did something lascivious to him. The dynamic was a bit intoxicating. Yet he was unsure as to whether he should be allowing himself to enjoy it.
“Does she have a name? Your goddess?” “Yes.” He smiled. “Her name is Aurora and Rhaego and mountain and stars and moon and tears and hope and death. She’s all things.”
“That’s a beautiful thought,” she murmured. He traced the curves of her lovely face. “You inspire beautiful thoughts.” She blinked at the compliment, a darker flush rising to her cheeks.
It took Aurora one step and she was standing atop her chair, dragging a confused Rhaego into a hug. Arms thrown around his neck, she pulled him close, ducking to avoid his horns. He remained still for a moment, hands stuck at his sides, but she squeezed, willing comfort to flow from her tensed muscles into him. Eventually he burrowed into the curve of her shoulder, his strong arms slipping around her back.
“Aurora,” he said, stopping her in her tracks. “Thank you, by the way. You didn’t have to…comfort me the way you did. But it helped.” Her throat swelled into a hard knot. “Any time.”
The rumble built, strong and resonant, the vibration running down his muscles and reverberating through his hands laid firmly over her womb. After a moment of stiffness, the touch and the heat from his palms must have registered. Aurora moaned, her rigid figure melting and falling back against his chest.
“Rhaego.” His name on her lips shot through his body like a warm caress. His cock jumped beneath the painful confines of his stays. Luckily her attention was so concentrated on his face that she didn’t notice the bar of rigid flesh straining toward her. “Did you mark me?”
“Besides, even if the Goddess’s gaze was fevered, couldn’t that mean she was overcome with passion? My opinion might not be worth much in this city, but I think you were blessed with a heart meant for love.” “That’s a beautiful thought,” he rumbled, guiding her to twist forward and dragging her back against his chest. His purr rumbled to life as he replaced his heated palms on her belly. “You inspire beautiful thoughts,” she breathed,
A sweet, delicious scent pulsed through the air, and she grinned, now knowing what it was. Fluttering erupted in her belly as she felt his face brush against her hair, marking her.
He braved a heated look at her neckline, then his red gaze lifted to her mouth and sighed. “The Goddess was unreasonably generous when she formed you.” Aurora’s skin warmed, her body swaying closer to his. He met her eyes. “It would be blasphemous to hide the fruits of her labor.” Insides melting, bones and all, Aurora was unable to utter a word of objection
Her gaze drifted back to Rhaego, brows drawn even in sleep. Maybe one day, with time and a little magic, he’d begin to truly see himself the way she did. “You are a good man,” she breathed into his hair while placing a kiss between his drawn brows. She repeated the words over and over until the lines on his face relaxed and the sky outside turned black.
Aiming a hard, uncompromising stare at him, she bent her head to the wide mushroom tip of his cock and said, “You will let me tend to you, husband.”
“It would benefit me greatly if you abstained from being so fucking beautiful.” The compliment was delivered with such severity that she could only chew on the inside of her cheek and stare.
“Don’t be sorry, little doe. You are my salve.” Her palm rose to cover his. “My world is blurred at the moment. I need time to make sense of it all,” he began. “But I love you, Aurora. If no other truth exists in this world, know that will always remain.”
