Redemption Noun The action of saving or being saved from sin, error, or evil. "God's plans for the redemption of his world".
“I killed his fucking wife, I know I at least owe him a conversation but…” I trailed off.
“I didn’t see Sherry, I swear. I was going too fast and then it was too late. I hit her, she…she died.” Tears filled Charlie’s eyes and it tore me in two. I looked away, unable to face him. “She did love to run at nighttime, said it was freeing. I told her it was dangerous but she always said, ‘Nothing bad’s gonna happen to me in this town’.” Charlie shook his head sadly.
But Charlie didn’t make a move to stand. “I’d like to come back, if that’s okay with you?” he asked, shocking me. My mouth opened and closed, floundering. “Why?” Charlie shrugged. “Because I want to forgive you. I know that’s what she would have wanted. You were a kid who did something stupid. You’re stuck here for over a decade still, your family’s abandoned you. I feel like you’re being punished enough and I don’t want any more tragedy. Something good needs to come from this.” I couldn’t believe it. “You want to forgive me?” I asked, dumbfounded.
Charlie told me that when I was released, he wanted me to come by the ranch. He said he had something for me. I don’t know what, and he never said anything more than that. Just told me that I didn’t need to worry about life once I was out, like he knew how much it stressed me out.
“Dogs choose you, you don’t choose them.”
I went back to the hardware store and piled it up with all my goodies and walked out with a big ass smile on my face. I practically skipped all the way home, practically because it’s hard to do with a piled high dolly, especially when it came to the gravel and grass.
And I had to watch him all shirtless and sweaty, doing manly things with hammers and drills and bits of wood that made my lady parts do a little dance, beg to make a little love, let alone get down tonight.
“You mean you hadn’t before you went to prison?” “No.” I said it through gritted teeth as she shifted, rubbing herself over me. “Oh…” Her eyes widened. “Ohhh…so this will be your first time?” “Yes. Which is why I stopped the other night.
“Look at us, two young, hot single men out for the night and sitting here all alone with root beers,” Leo joked, and I chuckled.
“If you’re coming back from Jack’s, I’m going to have a lot to say about it.” My throat dried. “Like what?” “Like, you shouldn’t be fucking our mother’s killer.” My mouth floundered as I struggled for words. “I thought you were warming to him?” She shrugged. “I might have been but that doesn’t change what he did. And for you to pursue this and think you’ll have some kind of relationship is crazy. Mom would be ashamed.”
“I wanted to have a date, my first date actually.” “Your first?” “Yes, you’ve taken a few of my firsts now.” “Yes, I have,” I replied smugly. “But now so have you. This would be my first official date too.”
“It kills me too when you show up here looking like that.” I ran my eyes over him, lingering here and there. He glanced down at himself. “I’m fully clothed?” “I don’t know who you’re fooling dressing like that, it’s like you want me to throw myself at you.” He groaned. “Don’t talk like that, please.” I laughed. “I’m not the one out here dressed like I’m just asking for it.” His eyes widened. “Are you for real? It’s a lumberjack shirt?” “You know exactly what you’re doing,” I teased.
so you got a little bit blocked about how to make money, but I’m not surprised after everything. There is nothing wrong with that, and needing time to suddenly become this savvy businesswoman who saves the ranch? Damn girl, grant yourself some grace!” There was a pause as we stared at each other. “But at least you were getting dicked down,” she snorted.
