He cups my jaw, tilting up my face until our eyes meet. It’s dark inside the cab, with minimal lighting from the parking lot, but his hold on me is firm and serious. “I wanna make sure I’m clear about one thing. Just because we’re takin’ things slow and not tellin’ anyone, doesn’t mean you aren’t mine.” Then he brushes the pad of his thumb and leans in.
Looking at Noah, I see the sun rising on a cool autumn day. Fallen leaves on the ground crunching when you walk on them. The scent of caramel pecan and pumpkin spice wafting through the air in early October. She’s my favorite time of year. And now, she’s mine.
“I want one thing to be clear. Just because we’re takin’ things slow and not tellin’ anyone doesn’t mean you aren’t mine.”
“On your knees, Goldie. Now.” I blink once at his harsh tone, but goddamn, it also turns me on. It’s gotta be all that monster smut I read before bed. Red flags? Nah, I’m color-blind.
“On your feet.” He holds his hand out to help me up and then cages me against the wall. “That’s why I was waitin’, Goldie. I knew the moment I had your hot mouth on me again, I’d fall too fast. I’ve never been drawn to a woman like this before, and it scares the shit outta me. I don’t wanna run you off by movin’ too fast, but my heart is all in, Noah. I know it’s supposed to be wrong—being twice your age, Jase’s dad, and the workplace policy—but when I think about you and how I feel when we’re together, nothing has ever felt more right.”
“Come inside me, Fisher. Please,” she mutters so quietly I almost don’t hear. With one last thrust, I soar off the ledge and release everything I have into her. She owns my heart. My soul. Every ounce of my love. “Fuck, Goldie.” More tears fall down her cheeks, but I don’t wipe them away this time. I lower my mouth and kiss each one.
“You don’t have to take care of me,” I say firmly. “This isn’t your fault, and I’m not your burden.” His eyes darken as his jaw clenches, and I worry he’s going to blurt something in front of my parents that’ll cross the line. But then he leans in close to my ear and murmurs, “You will never be a burden to me, Goldie. I would give up the privilege of breathin’ if it meant takin’ an ounce of your pain away.”
“I do.” His voice is closer now, and soon, his palm rests on my arm as if he wants me to know he’s here. “He called and left me a voicemail the day after y’all met and said, ‘Damien, I met her. The woman I’m gonna marry someday.’” Although I’m not even sure I can talk, I force out the words anyway. “You bastard. You weren’t supposed to tell her that.” “Oh my God! You’re awake?” Noah squeals. Finally, I manage to lift my eyelids halfway and smile when I see her beautiful face. “Hi, Goldie.”
Smiling, I pour my heart out to her. “You’ve been mine since I laid eyes on you. Even when we couldn’t be together, I was always yours.” Then I press my lips to her knuckles. “I’m madly and desperately in love with you, Goldie. Nothin’ would make me happier than you being mine out in the open for everyone to know you own my heart.”
“Thank you for stayin’ here with me. Wakin’ up to your voice and seein’ your gorgeous face is the only way I ever wanna wake up again.” She smirks, then sucks in her bottom lip. “I think that can be arranged.”
“I’d love nothin’ more than to see you pregnant with my baby and start a little family with you. If that’s what you’re worried about, then don’t be. But if you’re not ready—”
