“Say please,” I tell him. West’s eyes flash with amusement, and he leans in another inch. “Please, Nora.”
But she loves being praised. Good thing I fucking love praising her.
“Test me,” I say. “Get angry with me, argue with me. As long as you’re being yourself. Okay?”
“I can… kiss you?” she asks. Her voice vibrates, half excitement and half nerves. But her deep green eyes don’t stray from mine. “Yes.” It’s all I can do not to add please.
“How come you’ve always been able to see through it?” “You’re not the only one who’s perceptive,” I say. And because I’ve looked far, far too much at her over the years. And once I saw the real her, it was the only version I wanted.
“That’s it,” he murmurs, and the inches between us close. “You’re so pretty when you ask for what you want.”
“The only person,” he says darkly, “I should help prepare you for is me.”
I’m the one who sacrifices nothing and gains everything. I get you and Fairhaven.”
“Don’t marry me because you think there’s a sword over my head. The estate doesn’t matter. I’ll lose it before I lose you.” His hands tighten around my waist. “I won’t let you go.”
