“The most beautiful woman on the continent. No close seconds. They call her a vision, a masterpiece, a myth. From now on, she only has one name—mine,” he growled, twisting my face by my chin to look him in the eye.
“Raffaella Callaghan is mine. Nobody is to look at my wife, speak about my wife, or breathe in her direction. She’s under my protection now. The first to cross the line will be the last. They’ll be made an example.” His gaze dragged across the room, which collectively held its breath. “There will be no body to bury, no ashes to spread, no memory to spare if you’re stupid enough to disrespect her. Us. Understood?”
“I’m not letting you go, you know.” My voice was calm, final, before I let my eye flutter shut. “You’re mine. Only fucking mine. Till my last breath.”
“Next time you bring your whores to my apartment, I’ll just assume I walked into a suicide pact.”
My mouth twisted with a lazy smirk. “To keep my wife, Chiara, I wouldn’t only hit a woman, I’d chase God himself with a fucking baseball bat.”
“I would never hurt you like that.” I found my voice, opening my eye. “Even if I wanted to. Even if you begged me to. Even if you cheated on me. Even if you killed me.” And then, because it felt too raw, too real, I added, “Protecting you is a compulsion at this point. I’d stop the night from falling if darkness scares you, Lila.”
“Because you’re mine. Your moans. Your pleasure. Your words. No one else is allowed to hear them.”
Like she needed to seduce me. She could roll in pig shit and I’d lick her clean from head to toe.
“You survived nothing, sweetheart; everything you faced, you fought and overcame. You’ll brave this storm, too.”
Even in love, my husband wasn’t a hero in anyone’s story. He was a villain. And I wouldn’t want him any other way.
“I wanted it to be the first thing you’ll ever hear,” he explained. “So I’ll say it again—I. Love. You.”
“I love you, sweetheart. You fractured my soul and dug so deep into it, you are now ingrained in all that I am, and all that I ever will be. As for our son.” I placed a hand on his tiny shoulder, smiling down at him. “I already love him more than I do anyone else in the world.” But you.
