“Before you hang up,” Ezra rushes out, anticipating me. “Love you.” He is mocking, but he won’t let me go unless I say it back. Little pest. “Ya tozhe tebya lyublyu.” Love you too.
“Did they already tell you how badly I kicked their donkey?” Oskar cocks his head. “You mean ass?” “This is what I said.” Novi pats Oskar’s shoulder and lets himself inside, but not before winking at me over his shoulder.
You made me speak Russian when I didn’t have to?” I shrug. “You say that like you can actually speak Russian. You needed the practice.” Ezra switches to Polish. “Fuck you.” I blow him a kiss.
Anton is laughing. “You think Ez will be more patient? Ezra? I’ve seen him eat a banana through the skin because peeling it would take too long.”
Ezra turns to Oskar. “Quick, where’s your fruit kept?” “I could tell you that, but it wouldn’t matter anyway.” “Why?” Oskar hooks a thumb over his shoulder. “Lane hid everything phallic-shaped before you got here.” “The audacity.”
“Wow. Yes, wow.” I stand up, feeling so happy I might burst. “I want to say something,” I shout over the conversation in the locker room. It immediately pulls attention from my team. All I want to do is laugh, but if I start, I won’t know how to rein it in or control it. Giving some long, big, heartfelt speech isn’t me. So instead, I pull up the words I’ve always wanted to say and never could. “I’m gay, bitches!”
Tripp pulls a face. “Probably better I don’t tell you the rest, then. Bon Apple Tea.” I light up. “Oh, you know the game too?” “What game?” Colby sets his hand on my thigh and shakes his head at me. “Oh …” I wink at Colby. Tripp is not playing my mix-up word game. He is just stupid. “Bon Apple Tea!” I throw back his drink, and it burns the entire way down.
“Ty vyydesh’ za menya zamuzh.” Will you marry me? “I don’t know enough Russian to know what the hell you said.” That was the point. “When you figure out, you let me know.” He tries to copy what I said under his breath. Ezra falls back against the couch, panting hard. “It’s done.” I don’t think I want to know what it is. Colby turns to him. “What does ty vyydesh’ za menya zamuzh mean?” Ezra gapes at him. “Are you hitting on me? I am a married man.”
