As one of Flannery O'Connor's characters says, sin is not something we commit, it's something we are in.2 Sin is "a powerful force that grips us beyond the sovereignty of our wills." Sin cannot be fully explained "in terms of concrete actions wilfully committed, but as compulsions from which [we] cannot extricate [our]selves."3
