I shook my head, unable to release my hold on her son. Because her son was my sun.
When Joey whipped his own jumper off and placed it over her head, I felt another wave of emotion hit me. Sadness.
“Danny’s a dick,” Liz chimed in, moving to stand beside me. “And if he gives you guys shit for this, I’ll take off my shoe and stab him with it.” She looked at me and winked. “Especially you, birthday boy.” Oh fuck. My poor, poor heart.
“And he’s the only boy I’ll ever say yes to.”
“Because Hugo Boss-man loves our little viper,” he replied solemnly, gray eyes wide and unblinking. “You know that.”
“If Caoimhe marries Mark, then Liz and Gibs will be family.”
“No, we wouldn’t,” Gibs protested, sounding horrified. “Because he is not my brother.”
It wasn’t Feely’s fault. He didn’t live on the street, and Gibsie was a master concealer. The worse shit got at home, the more outrageously funny he became.
“Besides, we don’t need them to get married to be family.” “Exactly,” he said, wholeheartedly agreeing with her.
It hurt to sit on my chair in class, and by the time big lunch rolled around, I was close to losing my mind.
“I will return the favor, kid.” “Oh yeah?” I replied, tracking his every move as he stood up and dusted himself off. “How?” “That’s up to you,” was all Joey replied before he turned around and walked away. “I’ll be seeing ya, kid.”
the room that used to be Beth’s,
only to scowl at the absolute pigsty that was his room.
“No, you fucking cretin,” I seethed, whacking his hand away when he tried to grab my friend. “He’s my brother. Now get out of our way.”
when he wasn’t making my friend cry, he was making my babysitter cry.
even if the probability of getting my ass handed to me was high.
“I will cut them out of your gooch and feed them to your bitch-ass friend.”
I tried so hard to keep my cool, but when they targeted Gibsie, I lost it. He was so sweet and gentle, and he didn’t deserve to be picked on all because he didn’t want to play their stupid game.
Caoimhe knew, which meant it would only be a matter of time before Dad did, too. The moment my sister’s eyes locked on mine, I sighed in defeat. I’m so screwed.
“I’m feeling a lot better now, Doctor. Thank you for fixing me.” Disappointment filled her eyes. Nothing new there. “All right, Lizzie.” She sighed heavily. “We’ll try again at your next appointment.”
I was solely focused on their daughter.
Yeah, I already knew that. Caoimhe had told me countless times. Problem was, I had no memory of it.
No, because instead, you decided to flush your future down the drain for a dirty weekend with that prick Mark Allen!”
“I said I’m sorry!” Caoimhe screamed, and the sound of a chair scraping on tiles filled my ears. “But I had to go, Dad, I was running out of time—” “Don’t you dare say it!” her father roared. “I’m already fully aware why he took you over on the boat to England. I don’t need you verbalizing my worst fucking nightmare out loud!”
did the right thing for me, and I thought I was doing what was best for the—” “Don’t fucking say it!”
quickly realized that my parents’ approval was something I liked a lot and found myself wanting to do better to impress them more to keep them happy.
It had been weeks, and she was still crying.
This girl and these lips would haunt me for a lifetime.
I wanted to do that again. Every day. For the rest of forever. And I think he did, too.
According to Caoimhe, she was over eighteen and deserved to have her boyfriend stay over whenever she wanted.
