“That means we keep each other’s secrets and stick together, no matter what.” My heart leapt. “No matter what?” “Yeah, Liz.” Hugh smiled. “No matter what.”
“Because I trust you,” I told him. “You make me feel safe.” That seemed to confuse him because his brows furrowed together. “You’ll always be safe with me.” “I know.” I splashed him with my hand. “No matter what, right?” “Yeah, Liz,” Hugh chuckled, splashing me back. “No matter what.”
Mark didn’t fix me this time. Hugh did. And he didn’t have to hurt me to do it…
“I’ll always pick you, Liz.” Hugh’s arm came around my waist and he pulled me closer to his chest. “You’ll always be first choice.”
Honestly, if I could put her on my Christmas list this year, I’d retire from asking for gifts for the rest of my life. If I could just have Liz. Just her.
My one light in the darkness was the boy with whiskey eyes and a smile that healed parts of me the medicine couldn’t.
“Well, I put that there to remind you that as long as I have air in my lungs, I’ll never let you go under.”
“I know so, Hugh.” I sighed heavily. “And then, when you’re a world-renowned heart surgeon, you can come back home and fix mine.”
For the rest of this life and whatever followed—be it heaven, hell, purgatory, or a thousand reincarnated lifetimes—my heart would eternally beat for Hugh Biggs.
