Okay, so not hell. Just my life. That tracked, too.
“Plus, I’m not sure if you realize this, but I’ve got a lot of baggage. It might take all year just to get through it.”
“Where do you think you’re going?” Bandit squinted up at me and yawned. “And why would you think you’re going without me?” Heart hammering, I bent and ran a hand over his head. “Right, sorry about that. Come on then, we need to get Opie.” He ran ahead of me, silent on his paws. “I’ll get her. Where do you want us to meet you?”
“You know, one time, in my youth, I had a terrible crush on this sow. She was fluffy, and cute, and had this amazing stripe down her tail. I was sure we were going to mate for life. Turned out she was a skunk, and since I had a nose, it didn’t work out.” He shrugged. “It was a bad time, I was heartbroken, but that didn’t stop me from getting out there and trying again.”
“Okay, maybe I’m not the best at pep talks. Let’s go eat. Food makes everything seem less terrible.” I couldn’t disagree with him there, so I rolled off the side of the bed and stood, grunting as my muscles quivered in protest. But the truth was, he wasn’t entirely wrong. I had to dust myself off and try again. For Opie, if for no one else. “Why does my whole body hurt?” I demanded as I padded toward the bathroom to brush my teeth. “Could’ve been toppling down a well and nearly getting murdered by a sea witch.”
None of my friends . . . none of them could ever know. Which is why I kept to myself more than ever after their confessions. Struggled with every class, even with Doyen Bob, because I could not unsee the grief on my friends’ faces. I could not unhear the pain in their voices as they spoke of those they loved and lost to Nocta. People who’d been killed by my father.
Bandit shot into the room, skidding to a halt. “Mission accomplished. Don’t eat without me!” I snorted. “I haven’t even started making anything yet.” “Wait, you can cook? You’ve been holding out on me.”
“Was it just me, or was that seriously hot?” Bandit squeaked.
