Tem had chosen Caspen. But it wasn’t because she didn’t love Leo. It was because she wanted more for Leo. And in doing so, she had accepted less for herself.
“Temperance. You must be careful. Basilisks are free with their bodies but not with their hearts. It is a dangerous thing to love two people. You need to prepare yourself.”
“Do not come to me for comfort, Temperance. Come to me when you want me to fuck you the way my brother will not.”
“Your basilisk side does not function at half capacity just because it makes up half of you. The part of you that is a basilisk is fully so. The same with your human side.” “So?” “So you are two things, Tem. You always have been. And you are both of those things fully. Your power is unparalleled.”
“History will always repeat itself,” Maximus sneered. “We do not learn. We do not correct. We forget, and then we repeat the mistakes of our past. It’s a pattern, Temperance. One that cannot be broken.”
“Can the heart call to someone who isn’t a basilisk?” Adelaide gave her a careful look. “I…do not know.”
Then a knife pierced her heart. It felt like something had been removed—like Apollo had taken something from her. The way she felt for Leo—her love—was gone. There was still love left, but it was all for Caspen. The moment it happened, everything in Tem surged toward Caspen.
