Tem had chosen Caspen. But it wasn’t because she didn’t love Leo. It was because she wanted more for Leo. And in doing so, she had accepted less for herself.
She had always drawn comfort from Caspen. He was her protector; he would never let harm befall her. He was perfect in every single way. But Leo had ensnared her in a way she hadn’t expected, and Tem was having great difficulty shaking him.
“How can you always think the best of me?” “Because you are the best of me,” he said simply.
“Basilisks may be free with their bodies, but we are not free with our hearts,”
There was something to be said for simply trying. Many people were too afraid to even do that.
“I would not let you stray.”
A life without risk is not a life worth living, Temperance.
“You may belong to my brother, but I will protect you as if you are mine.”
“Because I can’t breathe when I look at you. Because it hurts”—he pressed his hands to his chest—“right here.”
