“But for what?” she whispers, pulse drumming in her ears. “What have I been chosen for?” She pats the back of her hand. “To put some good back into the world.”
“Not like this,” she whispers. She thought her tears had run dry, but she feels them slipping down her cheeks, dripping off her chin. “I didn’t think it could hurt like this.”
The names they call each other by might not be real, but she gets the sense that the tentative friendship they have is.
“Fear is for mortals,” she whispers. A reminder. A promise.
