“She wasn’t finished speaking,” Riley says, deathly low. The look in his eye is murderous. A shiver races up my spine when he curls his fingers into a fist. My cheeks turn bright red when he stares at my boss and tilts his head to the side. “And her name is Lexi. L-e-x-i. That’s not difficult, is it? Treat her with respect and get it right, or I’m leaving.” Holy shit.
The romance books I read are right: having a guy turn a little unhinged and defend your honor is sexy as hell.
“You were jealous,” I whisper. “Of course I was fucking jealous. He had your attention. And I’m fucking desperate for it.”
God forbid someone likes to pretend they’re in a fictional world where women are treated right and orgasms are plentiful, because no way in hell does that happens in the reality where I’m currently living.
It’s a good thing I didn’t die the night of the accident. If I did, I wouldn’t have gotten the chance to see the real heaven that is Lexi in her gold dress.
She feels so fucking right in my arms. The last piece of a puzzle and a key slotting perfectly into a lock. Fresh air on your face and coming home after a long day. I maneuver her shoulders so I can touch her hair, and I start to braid the long pieces that hang down her back.
“Go.” She swats at my arm, and I can’t help but laugh. “You’re distracting me from my reading.” “I’m going to get dressed extra slow just so you can finish that chapter.” “A man after my own heart.”
“Today was a good day,” I murmur. “They’re all good days with you, Riley,”
“The earth is officially ending. Ethan is doling out advice,” I say, and he flips me off. “I read books. I know a thing or two about women besides how to get them off.”
“Group hug,” he yells, and I laugh when they all tackle me. We fall on the floor and Ethan yells about my foot being in his ass. Liam tries to pull away, but Grant climbs on his back and keeps him there. It’s chaotic and insane but also exactly what I need.
I don’t know how Lexi does it, but I fall more in love with her every day. I walk into a room and she’s there, a book in her lap and a blanket wrapped around her shoulders, and it’s a lightning bolt to the chest. A flashing neon sign that says there’s the love of your life, and it’s true.
