An out-of-body experience, that’s what this is. My soul is up on the ceiling, dangling monkey-bar-style from a truss, staring down at my unresponsive body as it learns that it might not be able to have children. For the first time. In front of dozens of people. From someone who laughs it off as a best-case scenario.
“I don’t like her kind, either. Do I think she should have come here? Fuck no.” The agent blinks. I can almost hear his skin break into goose bumps. “Women? They belong in the kitchen. I don’t, though.” I can’t see Koen’s face, but the smile in his voice is bloodcurdling. “I get around. Would you like to apologize to the lady, or would you like to learn what that means?”
“That’s some grade A compartmentalization.” “Thanks.” I toss my hair back. “It’s the childhood trauma.”
“If I come back and something has happened to you, Serena, I’m going to be so fucking pissed.” I bite the inside of my lips. “That sounds like a you problem.” “Yeah. That it is.”
“Don’t…I’m sure it’s pretty. My instincts don’t really lean toward the aesthetics and architectural integrity of nesting.”
“Hush, killer. I got you.”
“You are the heart of this pack, Koen.” He nods. Even as he says, “And you are mine, Serena.”
“You told me that you loved me, Serena,” he says simply. His eyes are earnest, liquid. So profoundly good. “And while I’m willing to resign myself to an existence without the person I love, I refuse to condemn you to it.”
Basically, you are responsible for the worst of your own injuries. Way to show agency.”
“So we can just…stay here? In this cabin? And I’ll find some job? And you’ll do your Alpha stuff? And we’ll…we’ll go for runs together? And be boring?” “That sounds like a dream, actually.”
He sighs. Tightens his hold on me. “Such a fucking nuisance.” I wonder why it took me until this very moment to realize that it’s been his way of saying I love you all along.
He would die for her, and he would kill for her. More importantly, he will live for her.
