“She’s half Human, after all.” “And you’re half jackass. What a stunning coincidence.”
“You’re so fucking annoying.” Koen drags a hand down his face. “Yup.” Lowe stands. “Had a great role model.”
“I’m not afraid of your animals. Send them after me, and see what—” “Whoa. Highly offensive. Whatever have I done to make you think that I wouldn’t kill you myself?”
“If you make any more comments about this girl over here and I find out,” Koen says, too low for anyone but the three of us to hear, “it’ll be your throat.”
But she won’t stop protesting, and snarls that I’m “too valuable, too important, too loved” to be used as bait. God. What an inconvenient time for her to finally get in touch with her emotions.
“But what about the martyr character arc I’ve always wanted?” “Not on my watch. Not in my territory. Not under my protection.”
“I lie a lot.” “You shouldn’t. Telling the truth can be therapeutic.” I narrow my eyes. “You know what else can be therapeutic?” “Punching me in the nuts?” That’s exactly what I was going to say. “How did you know I—” “You’re pretty fucking predictable.”
Her laughter adjusts the spin of his atoms.
“If someone had given me a piece of paper and asked me to list everything I liked, everything I dreamed of, everything that I was sure would make me happy, you would have been the final product of it.”
“There could never be disappointment, because there were never any comparisons, or expectations, or hopes, or standards to meet. There’s only…” He casts a glance around the room, searching. Then his eyes settle on me. “There is only you, Serena.”
“Things have changed.” “Things—nothing has changed. You love the Northwest more than anything.” “Not more than anything, Serena.”
He would die for her, and he would kill for her. More importantly, he will live for her. She’ll be the purpose driving every second of his every day.
