The Madyamika school was founded by Nagarjuna around the 2nd century AD. In legend, Nagarjuna was taught by the Nagas, water-serpent deities who guard Buddhist scriptures that have been placed in their care because humanity was not ripe for their reception. The important school which Nagarjuna founded put forward no views of its own, but shows in its thousands of texts the self-contradiction inherent in any fixed view about the nature of reality.
