“Fairytales are as real as you and I,” said her aunt. “Just because most people have forgotten them doesn’t mean they never existed.”
“If you’re listening to me, send me a sign. Or anything really, anything that will make me feel less like I’m drowning alone.”
“Are you in the habit of getting caught in hunting traps? Or is this in my honor?” Her face felt like it would burst into flames. “You know, sir, a gentleman would help me get down first before asking all these questions.” “Ah but that would imply that I am a gentleman.”
“Remember, fairytales are inherently tales of goodness,
And then he was there, desperately raking his hands over her, his eyes wild and his lips thin. “Where are you hurt?” She looked at him, slightly mesmerized by his panicked searching. “Serena? Goddammit, tell me where you’re hurt.”
He cleaned her wound with startling gentleness while throwing her concerned looks in between. “Talk to me,” he ordered. “Tell me where it hurts.” “I’m all right,” she said in a barely audible tone.
“It hurts,” she whispered. He looked like she had just torn out his heart and stamped on it. “I know,” he whispered. “I’m so sorry.” She shook her head.“It wasn’t your fault.” He looked away, and the shame on his face made her heart ache. “I shouldn’t have let my guard down,” he said through gritted teeth. “I should have fought it off faster, and that way, it would never have gone near you in the first place.” Serena cupped his cheek, and their eyes met. “It’s not your fault. If you blame yourself every time I get hurt, you’ll never get a good night’s rest with all the brooding you’ll have to

“It’s funny,” he said, his eyes closed, “I’ve gone through my entire life alone, never feeling like anything was missing, but now that I’ve met you, Serena Rose, I feel like my life will never be the same without you in it.”
He nodded tightly, and then swung her into his arms. “I can walk!” “You just gave up a year of your life,” he said grimly. “Let me do this much at least.”
“If you ever touch her again, if you ever so much as look at her, breathe in her direction or even think of her, I will hunt you down and eviscerate you from your head down to your toes, until you’re trying to stuff your organs back in with your bare hands. And then, and only then, will I slit your throat. Do you understand?”
will never stay away from her. No matter where she is, no matter how far, I will always come for her. No attack you throw at me, no pain you inflict, none of it will keep me from the girl who has been my redemption, who is now my life. Without her, I am nothing.”
“I wouldn’t trade being here with you for anything in the world, do you hear me? I would rather have died in that tale than have never met you.”
“Listen to me carefully, Serena Rose. I am not doing any of this because of some sense of duty or pity. I am here because if you are not here, I have no reason to draw breath anymore. I am trying to keep you alive, because it is the only way I can keep myself alive. There is no version of me that will outlast you, and no future that does not have you in it. Have I made myself clear?”
“I told you, did I not?” he murmured, “If I had a hundred lives, I’d find you in each one, just to dedicate it to you. I love you now, I have loved you before, and I will love you every day after. I loved you without knowing your name, or hearing a single word cross your lips. I loved you just because you’re you, Serena Rose. I am sorry I did not say the words sooner.”
She tried to dart around him, but his body moved without permission, and he grabbed her by the waist, throwing her back. Oh fuck, fuck no, this could not be happening. He was getting to his feet now, raising the sword above his head. And then she did something horrible. She smiled. “It’s okay, Grim,” she whispered. “If it’s you, it’s okay.”
His heart feeling like a dead weight in his chest, Grim leaned down and pressed a kiss to Serena’s lips, which were already turning cold. “I’m sorry, Princess. Please, come back to me,” he choked out. “Come back, Serena.” And then, right before his eyes, the wound in her chest began to close. The blood spatters on her chest lifted off, and then disappeared, and after five agonizing seconds, Serena opened her eyes.
