Lucky for her though, I’m not a murderer.
“Uh, do I look like a heathen?” “I mean…the black eye is giving you a certain vibe.”
“The flesh poker?” I ask. “Is that what the youths are calling it?” “Uh, you are the youth, so you tell me.” “So are you,” I counter. “You’re still under thirty.” “Yeah, but it doesn’t feel like it,” she says on a sigh.
Her lips twist to the side while she starts to think. It’s kind of cute, the way that she gets lost deep in thought, as if no one else is around.
Then together, we walk the perimeter of the cabin, her hiding behind me, holding the dildo out. What is she going to do? Penetrate someone to death with that thing?
I turn to her. “Scottie, are we…are we meant to be?” She chuckles and says, “I think we might be.”
“Yeah, well, if you had told me a year ago I was going to pretend to be someone’s husband at a marriage summer camp, I would have said, where do I sign up?”
This woman is courageous, beautiful, sexy as fuck. Brave.
“Yes,” Wilder says. “I have feelings for her.”
“I need you to know that this is not goodbye. That when you get back to the city, I will most likely be at your doorstep, wanting to see you. Wanting to hang out. Just wanting to talk. I’ve grown accustomed to having you around, and I can’t just go without talking. How do you feel about that?”
“Trust in what I can provide,” I say, wanting to clarify. “I know you’ve been through a lot. If there’s one thing I don’t want you to ever experience again, it’s that feeling of insignificance. I’m in awe of you, and I know with certainty that I want to be a better man…for you. You deserve to be worshipped, so I’m going to prove that I can be the man who can do that. I’m going to prove that and more to you.”
“Now, there’s one thing I need to give you before you leave.” I pull out the Nerds Clusters from one of the baskets on the dresser that we didn’t finish. When I pass them to her, it makes her chuckle. “When you eat these…think of me.” “You’re really giving me the Nerds Clusters?” “Babe, that’s how much I like you.”
And once again, I scrubbed every inch, even took an old toothbrush filled with soap between my toes. That was a new experience.
“When you need a refill, let me know. Also, try eating an M&M along with some popcorn. Pure magic in your mouth.”
“This bracelet says you’re mine. Why would I take it off?”
She stands on her toes and kisses me, and the feel of her mouth, her excitement, her gratitude, it hits me differently. I like this. A lot.
“Hold on, so you’ve been offering marriage counseling to couples without ever being certified.” “You know, Wilder, lawyers always tell you to read the fine print for a reason.” He winks and then nods at me. “Go long.”
“Why did you wait so long?” “Because you needed to be loved in a different way.” My heart thumps madly. My yearning for this man is growing wild.
“And here I thought we were going to be a whole ‘till summer do us part’ situation.”
I knew the minute I told her I loved her that I was going to marry her, but I had to give her time to adjust to loving me, so I waited…and waited. I dated her, we moved in together, we started seeing Sanders for maintenance, and then when I thought the time was right, I started planning the proposal.
“I can’t unsee her. She…she captures my full attention. I can’t imagine anyone else ever passing up on the opportunity to talk to her, to joke with her, to spend time with her. She’s such a bright light that I never want to lose.”
