“Yeah, well, that ‘joke’ seems to have tarnished your opinion about yourself, and that’s unacceptable.” He tips my chin up with his thumb. “You hear me? Unacceptable. Do not take other people’s flawed opinions about you and turn them into your own. There is nothing wrong with your legs. Personally, I think they’re hot. The moment I saw you in that skirt standing outside Anthropologie, I thought to myself, she has hot legs. Nothing weird about them.”
“I want to feel like I’m the most important thing in your life. I want to come home from work to find you excited to see me. I want you to want to kiss me. Hug me. Touch me other than when it’s for sex.” Her eyes lift to mine. “I want to know that if I were to walk out that door, walk away from this relationship, that you would know it was the biggest mistake of your life.”
“Don’t,” I say. “Don’t get lost in that head of yours. Stay present with me.” I tip her chin up. “Stay here…with me.”
“Wilder, you have to stop looking at me like that.” “Like what?” he asks, still grinning. He hasn’t stopped grinning since we left the lake. “Like you’re going to take me back to that spot at the lake and do…things.” “Yeah, well, don’t fucking tempt me. You made me a man back there.”
One of the reasons you’re in a marriage is to have a partner in life that you can do things with, that you can experience things with, you know? And if you don’t take the time to have those experiences, then what’s the goddamn point?”
I wish I asked him to be more affectionate, more loving, to treat me as his wife, not his roommate.”
