The first and most obvious problem is that—to the extent that sociology misrecognizes and somewhat masks the fact that it is and has a sacred project—the discipline is being dishonest with itself, its students, their parents, college and university administrators and donors, and American taxpayers. Sociology is caught in a conundrum here. It is and has a sacred project, but it cannot own up to that fact and say it in so many words.
