To wit, a major misconception about the Twelve Steps is that they are a “self-help program.” I’ve actually heard mental health professionals, albeit not ones who specialize in addiction, refer to the Twelve Steps as such. This description is completely inaccurate. The Twelve Steps are the very opposite of self-help. Active addiction is self-help (“I take care of myself the only way I know how, because no one else can or will”).
