In the words of the Midrash, God made the world because “He yearned to have a dwelling place in the lower realms.” The Chasidic masters explain this to mean that God created the world because of a passionate desire to be “at home” in a realm inhabited by sentient beings with free will and ego-consciousness. Why God wants this, well, we cannot know.
