She was at her job. She couldn’t possibly be in any danger.
Ruth Anne said, “I worked in the Youngstown store for thirteen years without ever having a problem in the Showroom. But the first day I started here, I got real lost. Not the funny kind of lost, either. This was the scary kind.”
The problem was the liars. They said she could do anything she set her mind to, they told her she should shoot for the moon because if she missed she’d be among the stars, they made movies tricking her into thinking she could achieve heroic things.
That was her nature. Fail and quit. If you cut her open, it was fail and quit right down to her bones.
This was her last chance to turn back. This was her last chance to act like a smart person.
