I think this phrasing has already been used 1-2 times before. Repetitive.

I circled Janson again, purposefully making my steps louder. With each footfall that sounded around him, his body grew tenser as he braced.

I know that it’s not what it actually implies, but I just imagined Maximo stomping around and it made me giggle
