Halle might think the only person she can count on is herself, but I’ll prove to her that she can count on me too.
I probably shouldn’t say it, but the words fall from my mouth before I can stop. “You can touch me anywhere, Halle. Anytime you want.”
“You expect me to run, and I get it. No one has ever stuck around. But I need you to know—I need you to believe—that I don’t plan on going anywhere, not as long as you want me.”
“But you’re letting me in.” I swear he can read my mind. Maybe that’s what makes it easier to be myself with him. “Yeah,” I whisper softly. “I am.”
“And if I kiss you right now, what will you do about it?” I challenge. A lazy smile graces his lips. “Kiss you back.”
Caleb Thorne has a heart of gold. I can’t imagine there’s another soul on earth who is as truly good at their core as this man is.
Though I didn’t grow up in the best of places or under the best circumstances, I know Caleb is my person. I meet his eye, ensuring he can see the truth behind my next words. “I love you.” For an instant, he stiffens, his eyes going wide, but as the words sink in, he groans and presses a kiss to my mouth, his hand warm on my cheek despite the chilly air. “’Bout damn time you got on the same page as me. I love you too, baby.”
The day this girl moved in next door, I couldn’t have imagined she’d move into my heart too, but now that she’s there, she’s not going anywhere.
I can guarantee that I’m thinking about you right now. Miss you. —Caleb
“I love you. You make me happier than I’ve ever been, and I’m tired of always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Of thinking I’m not worthy of being happy. Of being loved by someone like you.” Tears prick at the backs of my eyes. “I want to choose you. I want you to choose me. I want to know every day that you’re not just the man I love but my husband. My partner. My—”
“No, Halle. I knew from the moment I saw you that you were going to change my life. It was like the universe finally gave me everything I’d been begging for. When I saw you, I knew you were meant for me. I just hoped I was meant for you too.”
if you haven’t figured it out yet, baby, I’m incapable of saying no to you.” “You’re really too good for me, Caleb,” she says softly. “No, I’m not.” I stroke my thumbs over her smooth cheeks. “You’ve just never met anyone who put you first before.”
“Because,” Quinn answers, “Caleb looks at you like you’re the only thing he needs in the world.” “Like he’d jump in front of a bullet for you,” Casen adds.
“Baby, when are you going to realize that you’re my world? I’d do anything for you.” She leans over, pressing her forehead to mine. “I love you.” I don’t say it back, because she already knows.
I never dreamed of finding someone like him. I didn’t think a love like ours existed. And I surely never thought I’d deserve it. But Caleb Thorne stormed into my life like a tornado, uprooting everything and putting it back as he saw fit, putting it back right and making me his in the process.
