Fayette didn’t count herself as much of a liar—stories, to her way of thinking, held essential truths and weren’t deceitful—so she was pleasantly surprised by how the falsehoods rolled off her tongue.

What she did miss, however, was family. Intimate talks. Hugs. Shopping with someone. The preciousness of silent companionship. That was the only sort of relationship she needed, and she’d never have it again.
