Though British marines struggled to prevent this violation of the Armistice, killing nine German seamen in the process, the Germans managed to sink the vast bulk of the Kaiser’s navy – 15 battleships, 5 cruisers and 32 destroyers – the largest loss of ships on any single day in the annals of naval history.
