Nevertheless for Britain and France, even more than for the Germans, a negotiated peace was unattractive. After two years of war, Germany’s armies occupied Poland, Belgium, much of northern France and now Romania. Serbia had been erased from the map. In London in the autumn of 1916 it was the argument over strategic priorities in the third year of the war that brought down the Asquith government.
