With the German onslaught on Verdun reaching its horrific climax, the Entente decision to bring forward the first major British offensive on the Somme was taken on 24 May 1916, three days before Wilson first announced his vision of a new world order at the New Willard Hotel.42 Though the British offensive failed to achieve a breakthrough, it threw the Germans onto the defensive.
