Despite Newton’s warning, gravity became accepted by scientists as a mysterious “action at a distance”, which pulled on material bodies without any intervening material basis, rather than as a product of actual matter pushing on a body just like any other product of motion. Gravity is a form of mechanically created change of motion, just like all the other physical forces that cause changes.
